How tutoring is taylored to meet your child needs

THE AIM OF TUTORING

The purpose of tutoring is to help your child to help themselves so that they can achieve their own academic goals.  A tutor can help assist and guide them so they can become independent, effective, confident and successful learners. Overtime it is anticipated that a child will become more reflective, resourceful and resilient when it comes to their learning and their learning behaviours. INTRODUCTION PROCESS AND INVESTIGATION OF CLIENT NEEDS

In the first instance, a tutor will meet with the client and child to have an introductory session (investigation and assessment).  In this session the aims, objectives, timelines, learning styles (e.g. visual, aural) and any additional learning support needs will be discussed. After a short period of reflection, the tutor will then prepare a plan and methodology.  Additionally, following a successful introductory session, the dates and times of tutoring sessions will be arranged. Some tutors will be very flexible with availability, other not so.  One thing that is certain is that our tutors have robust qualifications and experience in their subject(s), are committed, empathetic, honest and are skilled in creating a relaxed yet effective learning atmosphere.

HOW TUTORING WORKS

The tutor will fully investigate and identify the child’s comprehensive needs. Preferences of learning styles and a thorough understanding of the problem areas will allow for a tutor to plan the interactions and sessions to best suit the child. We have tutors that have pedagogical experience with high achievers and academically focused pupils. Additionally, we can also help to support pupils who have Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Autism, ADHD and various auditory and visual learning needs. Once the investigative and assessment session has been completed, planning the tutoring period ahead will begin.  This plan can be shared if required or desired and it could either span the full tutoring period or only a portion of it (which would allow for changing goals, changing pace and perhaps uneven progression).  We understand that the parent / guardian is nearly always the child’s best advocate (and the person who knows what they are capable of) which is why we will always ensure they have a say in the support we provide for the child. We welcome comment on the progress and efficiency of any tutoring programme and we will use any comments to create the right educational framework to help your child succeed.

HOW WE PLAN to MEET with  Parent/TUTEE (Pupil)  CAN BEST PREPARE FOR EXAMS

The following strategies are useful for pupils and parents / guardians.  It is recommended some of these tested strategies are tried.

 

  • Complete questions under replicated exam conditions
  • Revise for 40-60 minute sessions then take a 10-20 minutes break
  • Target set- particularly around the topics that are most difficult
  • Create a realistic study timetable

STRATEGIES THAT COULD BE SPECIFICALLY USEFUL TO BOYS:

  • Increased use of graphics, pictures, and storyboards in literacy-related classes and assignments
  • Project-based education
  • Hands-on kinesthetic learning (please see the graphic above)
  • Competitive learning opportunities
